about the current lecture:

under the guise of “security research”, research is being carried out on the kit nord campus
on 4th generation thorium liquid salt reactors, which will supply the world with electricity and heat in the future. these offer the possibility of continuously “tapping” weapons-grade uranium 233. with the processing system permanently installed in the liquid salt reactor, there is no need to go through technically demanding, expensive systems for plutonium extraction or uranium enrichment. this increases the risk of the proliferation of nuclear weapons drastically.

the danger that small states or states at massive risk of terrorism will become uncontrollable nuclear powers or that the technology will fall into the hands of terrorists is growing with another technology: the development of small mobile nuclear reactors (small modular reactors -smrs), which are intended to produce decentralized "cheap" nuclear power and process heat, including further nuclear waste, even in developing countries.

research on future nuclear reactors for generating electricity and heat, which at the same time produce uranium capable of nuclear weapons and leave behind further nuclear waste, is a wrong path in view of the global expansion of increasingly cheaper renewable energies.

despite the nuclear phase-out, germany wants to play among the major nuclear powers and is supporting one of the most dangerous civil technologies ever developed with the liquid salt reactors - with the support of our karlsruhe nuclear researchers at kit-nord, at a joint research center of the eu commission, the jrc-joint research center karlsruhe, as well as at other institutions in germany and worldwide!

dr. moormann reports on the ongoing work and dangers on the new generation of these nuclear reactors, which interested experts describe as “inherently stable”.
about the person: dr. rainer moormann, aachen

dr. rainer moormann received the whistleblower prize in 2011 with 35 years of experience as a chemist and reactor safety expert at the jülich nuclear research facility (kfa), now the jülich research center (fzj).

the prize has been awarded every two years since 1999 by the association of german scientists e.v. (vdw) and the german section of the international association of lawyers against nuclear arms (ialana). personalities who have uncovered serious grievances in their work environment or sphere of activity that pose significant risks to people and society, the environment or peace.

dr. moormann received the prize because he made public the possibility of accidents and risks with catastrophic consequences for people and the environment associated with the pebble bed high-temperature reactor (htr) technology.

interested circles in the professional world, business and politics still praise this type of reactor today because this technology is “inherently safe”: there is no risk of a core meltdown; nuclear catastrophes are therefore not to be feared. dr. moormann, on the other hand, has revealed that the avr jülich experimental nuclear power plant, which was finally shut down in 1988, was inadequately protected against excessive operating temperatures in the reactor core during normal operation for years. he presented evidence that the operating company had probably noticed the problem of excessive operating temperatures since the late 1970s. u000b
through the investigations of dr. moormann also had reasonable suspicion that the avr jülich narrowly escaped a disaster on may 13, 1978 with the devastating consequences of widespread radioactive contamination of the environment. the operating company, fz jülich and state and federal supervisory authorities have not yet adequately dealt with this dangerous situation.  u000b
dr. moormann's whistleblowing and his orientation towards the common good are exemplary of responsible scientific action, which is urgently needed today.
