 Ask a Question

Letter to the editor on: "better than burying" bnn from the region from december 18th, 2013

by revealing mr. bläß's insider knowledge in his letter to the editor "better than burying", it is now obvious to everyone that the itu (kit-nord) in leopoldshafen, formerly the karlsruhe nuclear research center, is researching the next generation of nuclear power plants. this means that, despite the federal republic of germany's decision to phase out nuclear power, the itu is preparing for a re-entry with the help of new 4th generation nuclear power plants.

he now calls the cover "research with the aim of eliminating dangerous, long-lasting nuclear waste" and "nuclear power plant as a transmutation machine". in the future, nuclear waste is to be eliminated by building more nuclear power plants - that is the nuclear researchers' answer to the "allegedly unresolved disposal question"!

but the fact that the nuclear waste that has already been generated in germany is not at all part of the debate during transmutation (conversion) and the partitioning (reprocessing = p&t) that is necessarily associated with it has escaped mr. bläß's notice. all low- and intermediate-level nuclear waste is not affected, nor is vitrified waste, which will continue to emit radiation for thousands of years. the many thousands of barrels of nuclear waste that are still in the asse and the over 100,000 in the kit nord cannot be eliminated with the 4th generation of nuclear power plants.

only the fuel elements (and that is the smallest part of the existing nuclear waste) would be in the new nuclear power plants (p&t) and only with the use of huge amounts of energy, with the same potential risk of nuclear power plants (fukushima) and with radioactivity contamination of wastewater through reprocessing (la hague, sellafield). the fact that this will result in further new nuclear waste, that final repositories will continue to be needed for tens of thousands of years, is all something that mr. bläß is keeping quiet or does not want to acknowledge.
