 Ask a Question

Letter to the editor about your article "headquarters of the nuclear police" from november 22nd, 2013 bnn karlsruhe from the region

"basic research ... karlsruhe nuclide map .... security research ... nuclear police ... location factor for karlsruhe ... mediation project ..... new itu building". these are the keywords that you read in the bnn article on the 50th anniversary of the itu in eggenstein-leopoldshafen - that sounds pretty good. critical comments such as: “no” facility for the nuclear industry..., enthusiasm among surrounding communities is limited..., due to concerns, the new itu building had to be improved... but they cloud the image of a clean research laboratory.
in fact, despite germany's decision to phase out nuclear power, vigorous research into the next generation of nuclear power plants can be carried out at the itu. the whole thing also with the blessing of the baden-würtemberg green federal government. despite filters, the dangerous radioactive plutonium is emitted every day from the chimneys (there are over 35 on the site), unfortunately not for the benefit of our health because just a single inhaled plutonium particle can cause lung cancer. in addition, huge amounts of extremely dangerous radioactive materials are stored in their rooms.
unfortunately, the itu still believes, as it did in the 1950s, that nuclear technology can solve the energy problem of the future and that radioactive waste is no longer such a big problem with the new generation iv nuclear power plants. if not germany (or is it?), then other countries should be blessed with itu technology (new fuels).
i keep asking myself, how can we remind scientists of the history of atomic energy. have they still not learned anything, and when will they give up on new reactors?
thanks to countless reports, we are now informed about the harmful extraction of uranium, about the production of weapons-grade plutonium or about countries that handle radioactive materials carelessly. contaminated air, soil and water in the vicinity of nuclear facilities (including research facilities), increased risk of cancer, especially in children, and much more shows the ugly side of human ingenuity and makes it clear that research should not be carried out into everything that humans are capable of.
therefore my appeal to the “nuclear police”: take your task seriously and prevent further research in the itu that would prevent or delay the nuclear phase-out in germany want.

with kind regards
