Letter to the editor:
to: buffer storage? intermediate storage? - linkenheim-hochstetten local council sticks to the ban on changes (bnn february 5, 2013)
a green meadow was promised and now an interim final storage facility for radioactive materials is to be built on a large scale. once again an attempt is being made to deceive the citizens. it's just a good thing that there is still a level-headed mayor and local councilors who won't just let everything the nuclear lobby wants happen to them. that's why the local council has now extended the ban on changes and, if necessary, even wants to use legal advice to prevent anything bad from happening. because only the municipality fulfilled the promises made in the mediation in 2011, but not those responsible at itu, wak and the green ministry for the environment - that was what we read.
the history of the atomic research center (formerly fzk, then kfk, now kit, on whose premises - separate - the itu is located) is riddled with false promises. it was promised in the 1950s that neither humans, animals, plants nor water, soil and air would ever be threatened by radioactivity from peaceful nuclear use. this too has never been complied with and will not be in the future. thick air comes out of huge chimneys and distributes plutonium, of course within legally permitted limits. a substance so toxic that a single incorporated molecule is certain to cause cancer. the "dead rhine" between linkenheim and phillipsburg has long been contaminated with radioactivity - including plutonium from the research center. you would think that would be enough - but far from it. now the itu is openly researching the fuels of the next generation of nuclear power plants, even though germany has officially phased out nuclear technology. the resulting waste should then be stored directly in the hardtwald in the wak. for me this is all pure madness.
in 1957, the construction of the unpopular nuclear research facility in the hardtwald alone caused a boycott of the federal election among citizens. only 2% of those from linkenheim who voted at the time went to the ballot box. all communities surrounding the research center were against the construction. today it is up to us to support the mayor and to speak out clearly in favor of research into the disposal of nuclear waste, but against any measures that continue to rely on nuclear energy instead of renewable energies. if we don't do it for ourselves, then at least for the sake of the next generations.
